How to Submit a Sitemap to Google Search Console
Generating a sitemap is only half the battle. To reap the SEO benefits, you must explicitly tell Google where it is. The best way to do this is through Google Search Console (GSC).
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site's presence in Google Search results. It is an absolute must-have tool for any website owner.
Step 1: Verify Your Website Property
Before you can submit a sitemap, you must prove to Google that you own the website.
- Go to Google Search Console and log in with your Google account.
- Click "Add Property" in the top-left dropdown.
- Choose "Domain" (recommended) or "URL prefix". Domain verification requires adding a TXT record to your DNS settings, which proves ownership of the entire domain, including all subdomains and http/https variations.
- Follow the verification steps provided by Google.
Step 2: Submit the Sitemap
Once your property is verified and selected in the GSC dashboard:
- Look at the left-hand navigation menu. Under the Indexing section, click on Sitemaps.
- In the "Add a new sitemap" section, you will see your domain URL followed by an input field.
- Type in the path to your sitemap (e.g.,
sitemap.xmlorsitemap_index.xml). - Click Submit.
Step 3: Review the Status
Google will instantly attempt to fetch your sitemap. You will see one of three statuses:
- Success: Google successfully downloaded and parsed the sitemap. You will see the number of "Discovered URLs".
- Has errors: Google downloaded the file but encountered formatting issues. Click on the sitemap to see the specific error (e.g., "Invalid XML tag", "URL not allowed").
- Couldn't fetch: Google was unable to reach the file. This is usually due to a server error, a firewall blocking Googlebot, or a simple typo in the URL you submitted.
Monitoring Over Time
You don't need to resubmit your sitemap every time you update it. Once submitted, Google will periodically check the file for updates. You can monitor the "Page Indexing" report in GSC, filtering by your sitemap, to see exactly how many of your submitted URLs are actually being indexed, and troubleshoot the ones that aren't.
